REED is transforming itself from a print-based project to a digital humanities project. For the maximum benefit from the quantity and complexity of REED's data (27 collections already in print), a wider audience of users needs sophisticated web applications to analyze REED's massive archive of evidence and to make connections previously impossible among data located in different REED volumes. The pilot database project, funded by an NEH Digital Humanities Startup Grant, is the first major step in developing a new production environment for generating simultaneous print and fully searchable digital editions.

SQL Schema Table layout of existing REED records database.

Ingest A TXT file of a PERL script, which parses REED document text files, converting REED's markup into TEI-Lite conformant XML, and populates the REED database.

Mkhtmlrtf A TXT file of a drafted PERL script, which queries the REED database and formats the resulting data as Microsoft Word RTF output. Prepared as a proof-of-concept side-experiment to prepare Reader's Packages for peer review. (Implemented as textual conversion, as data storage format was still to be determined and implemented. An XML transform with stylesheets will be developed in the next phase.)
